Jewell Black Raspberry
Jewell is an appropriate name for these beautiful plants and the fruits they produce. Jewell produces large crops of berries that are rich in flavor and offer a wide variety of culinary usages. The berries are large, many growing to be the size of a nickel or larger.
They are firm, which also makes them easier to manage for harvesting and they store well for several days, refrigerated or as a whole berry, frozen. The large berries are easily picked from Jewell's upright canes and at maturity each plant can yield 8 to 10 pounds.
Well known for their panacea of health benefits, black raspberries are one of the best fruits for the home gardener or for commercial production.
Raspberries are naturally biennial with a perennial crown. Primocanes grow the first year, go dormant in fall, get chilled in winter, and fruit the following summer (the primocanes are now called floricanes, which die after fruiting). New primocanes are growing as the floricanes fruit. Floricane varieties must be pruned in the spring to thin the fruiting canes and remove dead canes for better disease management and fruit size.
