Vaccinium vitis-idaea

The Lingonberry is a close relative of the Cranberry and Blueberry. Once established, each plant will produce hundreds of small red berries. The harvested berries do not require cooking and can be eaten fresh.  They are frequently for baking, in muffins, cakes, or breads or for making jelly or preserves.  They can easily be stored by freezing.

Red pearl is a Dutch cultivar.   It is known to be fast-growing, robust variety, producing dark red, round fruit larger (1/3 inch diameter).   It is tolerant of less than ideal soil conditions.

The plants will begin to produce fruit in the second or third season and begin to spread naturally.  A proliferation of small, open, bell-shaped flowers appear, followed by green fruits and ripening to deep red.  They produce 2 crops per year, summer and fall.

Lingonberries spread by underground stems to form dense clonal colonies and spread outward several feet within a few years.  Hence, the plants have many uses both as an evergreen ground cover and as a food crop.  The lingonberry plants can be grown as a companion plant with lowbush and highbush blueberries in the landscaped garden.

Research indicates that the fruits have health benefits. The berries contain plentiful organic acids, vitamin C, vitamin A (as beta carotene), B vitamins (B1, B2, B3), and the elements potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

They grow wild on the forest floor and are native to boreal forests and Arctic tundra throughout the Northern Hemisphere from Eurasia to North America.  Their traditional usages include syrups, compotes, smoothies, pies, scones, liqueurs and spirits.

Two or more cultivars are recommended for optimum pollination and to obtain the largest fruits.
